A story about Robert J Sawyer
I first met Robert J. Sawyer in 2001, after writing him an e-mail about possibly interviewing him for my nascient website. At the time I lived in Detroit, and though I’d only proposed e-mailing him a series of questions, he suggested that I could instead come to Eeriecon, a convention that he was attending in Niagra Falls, NY.
I did so, and was instantly impressed by his wit and charm. We had a very pleasant interview and I found the convention to be absolutely enjoyable. As I continued on the circuit of conventions in the area, I frequently ran into Rob.
Then, in 2005, I had the pleasure of attending the “Writing with Style” workshop at the Banff Centre for the Arts, in Banff, Alberta. Rob was the facilitator there. Over the course of the week, I was pleased to work with Rob as my mentor. He was incredibly supportive.
My interactions with Rob over the years have continuously impressed upon me how important it is to maintain perspective, even when you’ve become incredibly successful in the field like Rob has.
If you want to meet Robert, then I would highly suggest that you go to a convention that he is attending. He is very approachable.
